9/11

Reflect on the events of 9/11.  Watch the video here.  Think about the impact photos have on people.  Conduct a discussion about what makes the photos in the video powerful.  What do they all have?  What do they not have?
Is there a picture from 9/11 that you think captures the events/emotions fully?

  1. The photos in the picture are powerful in ways we can not explain. They allow us to see what we have missed, and to grasp the destruction and what was lost. The pictures from 9/11 that captures the most, I think, were not the burning buildings, but of the people and their reactions as they looked up at the falling towers in fear of what was too come. Buildings do not make up america, people do. Which is what makes 9/11 so tragic.

  2. The pictures of 9/11 are very powerful because of the emotional impact the event had. When we look at pictures of 9/11 or the holocaust we seem emotional trauma. The personal connection to the loved ones we knew in 9/11 is what truly makes the pictures powerful. All of these pictures included tragedy and pain, which are things we all feel when reflect upon them. The thing thats special about these pictures is you can see not only the pain, but the hope that is had for the future, especially once we include the american flag being raised which represented our faith in our country recovering from this horrible event. Its with deep emotion and pain that these pictures capture how we all felt about 9/11, whether or not we were there.

    1. I can see what you mean by seeing the hope as well as the pain, and it's a good way to look at it.

    2. i agree with you that the pictures evoke feelings in everyone who sees them "whether or not we were there" because even though we were young at that time, it still affects us and is still a major event in the history of the nation.

  3. Although, there were many pictures captured on 9/11 and most were of the building and people in fear. These pictures do capture the event and what actually happened, but I believe the picture of the flag being raised captures our spirit. That we will not let it effect us and how strong we are as a nation.

    2. I agree that the picture of the flag was a great picture to represent 9/11. It symbolizes that the United States is still strong and can recover from the events of that day.

  4. Photos have a profound impact on people. Photographers have the power to capture a moment and preserve the memory forever through their photographs. like one of the people said in the video "they capture humanity at its best and its worst". the photos in this video show the destruction, the death, the desperation and panic of this horrific incident. some of the photos show the humanity such as the raising of the flag, and others show the falling, and burning buildings. Personally the "falling man" photo still stands out to me the most. it gives me chills. its also extremely sad to see the change in the skyline, with the absence of the towers.

    2. I love your comment on it showing our humanity, whether positive or negative. I also agree with the flag showing humanity, I felt it showed faith in our country as well.

  5. These pictures on this video were strong to me because for some people it was hard to even take these pictures and witness it. It was hard to even stand there knowing that they couldn't do anything but take those pictures. The pictures are hard to see but looking at it we will never forgot what happened on that horrible day. The picture that stood out to me was the picture with the flag being raised because it shows that no matter what happens America, we always stand together. But the picture that captures this day in its emotion so well is the pictures that had the people and their reactions to what just happened, all were shock. The falling man picture showed that the man knew he was going to die just like almost every one else in the buliding.

  6. The photos from 9/11 are very powerful because they manage to show us at a time of weakness, but they also show how resilient Americans are. All of these pictures show the emotion of the civilians that day. One thing they did not put in the video was the reaction of our President. I think it's impossible for one picture to describe such a horriffic event, but the best photo I saw was the firemen raising the American Flag in the rubble. That picture speaks to the motto of "Never Forget" and to me the flag was a symbol of unity.

    1. thats true no picture was made on bush's reaction to the event

    2. I think its good that bush didn't react on it (or through a picture at least) seeing as this gives the american people more voice.

    3. I agree, the reaction of our president would probably be an important thing to put in the video. However, I think it would be hard to capture the president's reaction in a picture. I think how we reacted as american citizens speaks for how our president reacted/ would react.

  7. i think the photos on 9/11 impacted us in such a way that we dont want to see them. By not seeing them people can trick themselves into thinking that their husbands and wives WILL walk through the front door and come home from those deadly buildings. The people in these pictures are not models that are being told how to pose and react, but rather innocent people looking in disbelief. Most were thinking about the last things they said to their loved ones, who may never be seen alive ever again. What happened on 9/11 will never be forgoten, especially for the ones who only read about it.

  8. The pictures of 9/11 are extremely powerful. They grasp concepts that we are not able to put into words. These images show the emotions on Americans faces, the distraught looks and faces of pure confusion. All these photos have aspects that we can relate to. Images of men falling from the buildings, people running out of the burning and collapsing buildings. Each of these images have something special that spark our emotions. The images of the people allow us to relate to the emotions of people that day, the images of the plane crashing into the World Trade Center give us a feeling of pain. There are also images that bring a feeling of hope, like the firefighters raising the flag. Pictures allow people who weren't there to be able to experience the moment for themselves. I do not think there is one specific picture that captures the emotion of that day, but all the pictures combined are what create the story.

  10. The events of September 11th completely changed America, if not the world, in minutes. Not everyone in the world however were there in Manhattan on September 11th and some weren't even able to watch TV or use the computer because they didn't have one or were working or at school. Although some people were able to watch the events as they happened as I was, those people could not and depended on picture to tell what happened earlier that day or week. The pictures were powerful because they showed every possible aspect of that day. Although they weren't able to get pictures of people on the plane or the people in the restaurant at the top of the tower (where no one survived from), they were able to get people who were working their way down the towers, first responders, people running away, people searching the rubble, and the towers themselves. All of these pictures have a purpose. They were all supposed to tell exactly what was happening through the lens of their camera. Everyone who saw these pictures were able to put themselves in the perspective of the photographer, and also maybe the people being photographed. Without photographs on September 11th, no one probably would be able to imagine the horror of that day, which would diminish the sorrow.

  11. The pictures taken on 9/11 are able to tell the story of that day all on their own. They portray the horrible destruction and damage that took place as the planes crashed into the World Trade Centers and as the buildings eventually crumbled down. A variety of reactions and emotions are captured on the faces of all witnesses and are able to show the shock and terror that everyone was feeling during that exact moment. There were many pictures that also show the determined effort people were putting into helping as many victims as they could.

  12. The photos from 9/11 help everyone remember that tradgic day for the United States and allows people to never forget what happened. The pictures show all the different ways it affected people. All the pictures make you feel different emotions as you look at them. Some of the pictures from that day make you feel sad but others make you feel hopeful. One picture in particular that captures the events and the emotions of 9/11 was the one of the three fire fighters putting up the American Flag. It shows all the damage that has been done to our country but it also shows how there is still hope. The American Flag symbolizes that 9/11 has brought unity to our country and that we could recover from the tradgic events as a whole.
